About 10,000 athletes from more than 200 countries are set to descend on Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, as the Summer Olympics get underway Aug. 5 to 21.

CBC's coverage begins prior to the opening ceremony, as Canada's women's soccer team opens its Olympic tournament against Australia in Sao Paolo on Aug. 3. 

Canada heads to Rio looking to improve on its medal count from London, where the country's only gold medal was courtesy of trampolinist Rosie MacLennan. She'll be back to defend in Rio on Aug. 12.
