Travis Gerrits 4th in World Cup aerials opener

Chinese win 4 medals on home turf

Canadian Travis Gerrits got off to solid start Sunday in Beida Lake, China, finishing fourth in the World Cup opener in aerials.

Gerits finished with 111.89 points, good for fourth place. 

The event was won by Zhongqing Liu of China, with 127.15 points. Anton Kushnir of Belarus was second (124.43), followed by China's Jia Zongyang (120.81). 

Gerrits, from Milton, Ont., has already qualified for the Sochi Olympics based on a silver medal performance last season at the world championships.

Li Nina of China won the women's competition, with a total of  94.11 points. Ashley Caldwell of the United States (93.41) and Sicun Xu of China (75.24) rounded out the podium.

Sabrine Guerin of was 12th.
