The long track speed skating trials wrapped up recently, which determined Canada's World Cup roster in the weeks ahead.

Two-time Olympic medallist Christine Nesbitt of London, Ont., and Ivanie Blondin of Ottawa each won two races at the event in Calgary. Nesbitt also qualified at a third distance (1,000 metres) based on last year's results, with Kaylin Irvine posting the fastest time at the distance of those who competed.

Nesbitt and Blondin will be joined by Regina's Kali Christ and Winnipeg's Brittany Schussler to form the World Cup women's pursuit team.

Denny Morrison, the most decorated active men's skater in Canada, got an injury exemption due to a rib ailment. Morrison, Jordan Belchos of Toronto, Saskatoon's Lucas Makowsky, and Mathieu Giroux of Pointe-aux-Trembles, Que., are slated to be the men's pursuit team.

There are several skaters who'll get a chance to make their World Cup debut: Regina's Marsha Hudey, Lauren McGuire of Ottawa, Winnipeg's Heather McLean, Josie Spence of Kamloops, B.C., Vincent De Haitre of Cumberland, Ont., and Alexandre St. Jean of Quebec City.

The World Cup circuit starts on the Calgary Oval on Nov. 8-10, with a stop the following weekend in Salt Lake City before the best in the world head to Europe.

The Sochi team will be determined by World Cup results and the Canadian Olympic trials, beginning in Calgary on Dec. 28.

Four-time Olympian Jeremy Wotherspoon, still the current world record holder at 500 metres, failed in his attempt to come out of retirement and qualify for the World Cup roster. He vowed to continue his training, with an eye towards the Olympic trials.
