Sochi Social: Arriving in Sochi

Olympic Park in Sochi, Russia

I’ve only been in Sochi, Russia for one day but I’m already enchanted. The coastal city has a golden glow that can be seen from thousands of feet in the air. I caught a quick glimpse at the cluster of venues on the Black Sea from my plane window and I finally got that feeling I had been waiting for.

It was a mixture of excitement, exhaustion and curiosity. After a long trek through airports and security checks, I had arrived at the site of the biggest Olympic Winter Games in history and you didn’t know it, but you had come along for the journey.

Trust me when I say I've packed enough for all of us. I’ve been sent to Sochi with an important task: bring you closer to the action and the Olympians than you’ve ever been. I have an all-access pass to show you what’s happening behind-the-scenes in Olympic Park and the International Broadcast Centre. These updates will be shared on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and wherever else the digital world may take them.

All of the videos captured on the Sochi Social Cam will be posted to our YouTube channel. You have a part to play in this adventure through the social networks that you log into daily. By connecting with me and CBC Olympics in all of these places, your messages and questions for Canada’s Olympic Team will get delivered to the athletes. I’ll capture all of their answers and share them with you  in photos and videos.

If you're on Twitter, use the hashtag #ourathlete to stand out from the crowd. My goal is to take these social interactions off the screen and turn them into real Olympic memories. I’m equally thrilled about the videos I’ll be shooting from the camera in my glasses, to give you a true  perspective of what Sochi looks like through my eyes. What would you like to see in Olympic Park? Shoot me a tweet @MonikaPlatek and I’ll try to add it to my route.

We want to give you more than just one perspective so we created the Social Ambassador Team. These CBCers will be tweeting as they work in a variety of locations over the next few weeks, from Adler Arena to the CBC studios. We want to bring you a kaleidoscope of coverage as colourful as the city of Sochi. Let me know if you’ll be joining me on this adventure as we capture and create the most exciting Olympic moments the social world has ever seen.
