Ski jumping is a family affair for the Tanakas.
Atsuko’s father used to practice ski jumping in Japan and she became interested in the sport after having watched her older brother, Yuya, competing.
Atsuko started jumping when she was 10 and had her debut at the Continental Cup in 2004, before her 13th birthday. In 2010, she decided to go study in Japan and she represented her parents’ country until she came back to Calgary, in June of 2012.
The following September, Atsuko Tanaka won her first medal – a bronze - at the Grand Prix in Almaty, Kazakhstan. She finished the season in 4th place.
